The biggest choice to make before deciding how much wattage you want or voltage of the motor is deciding if you want a Brushed or Brushless motor.

One is not better than the other, just different. 50% of the people like brushed and the other 50% want brushless. It just depends on what kind of riding you want. If going for brushed, they are less efficient but the torque that many people crave and super fast accelerations make up for it. Some people want brushless as they can go 20 miles on a single charge and still reach top speeds but takes longer to get to that speed. Some motors are better for wet areas. Some are better sealed and insulated for water leaking in. If in places where the motor gets hit by rocks having a thicker motor housing is usually better.

I have heard about some motors rusting when the copper windings get rusted inside the motor. Make sure the motor you get meets the requirements for it being splashproof. I have even called companies and they have splashproof as well as the type that are cheaper that are not sealed as well.

Better motors have more stacks of copper windings. The more stacks it has usually the better and many companies don't even know how many stacks of windings their motor has. This is why I had to call the motor companies or distributors selling that motor.

The torque on some motors are going to be low no matter how powerful the battery supply is. If the motor is only rated at 300 ounces/inch then it can only go that high. If it has a 700 oz/inch rating, and if the battery does not have enough amperage to run it, then by having a 1000 watt motor really doesn't matter.

Cheaper motors that are made with inferior engineering that are really cheap to buy can be very inefficient. If the motor is over 80% efficient then its probably a good motor. This is usually for the brushless motors as brushed type are known for inneficiency but high power. The Eglide is the most expensive and highest torque and fastest acceleration board on the market I have tested and its the least efficient of all. Usually the motors that are louder have less efficiency. You can always contact the place who makes the motor and get in writing their efficiency ratings. So many people just rely on what they hear and don't even think to make an effort to find the informatin from the source and get it in writing. I always get stuff in writing in case something is not accurate or I think I heard something that is not true. Some of these electric skateboard motors are the same quality as those scooters that kids stand on that have the same power and are 300 bucks. So why are they charging 800 bucks for the nearly the same configuration but just on a skateboard instead.

Take my skateboard quiz and let me know what you will be using the board for and I will help you pick out the right one.
