Overheating is the biggest problem outside of batteries not holding enough charge as they age. The motors in the electric skateboards are very vulnerable to overheating on some of the brands. When they get over 185 degrees with the higher powered lipo batteries, the magnets get very hot and get damaged. I've been told that if I cant hold the motor or touch it in my hand without letting go, then its too hot and should be cooled down.

Note: Many of the newer generation electric skateboards have sensors so it cuts off when it gets too hot.

If it does not have this, the motor can get hot to the point where the motor cant dissipate the heat fast enough. If I know I am going to abuse my board, I keep a fan in my back pack if I am going for a long ride. With some of my boards, I keep 2 extra batteries in my back pack. They each are good for 18 miles.. so I can go about 55 miles and I'm good to go. I'll go into a coffee shop and charge all 3 batteries if I need to. I always go up hills so I usually get about 30 miles. The batteries only weight about 11 lbs each.

As long as their is a safety cut off when it gets hot, the copper windings won't overheat. Some might need to be calibrated once a year the thermal overload relays so it trips the motor so the motor never overheats.

Note: The temperature outside effects the torque and responsiveness of the motor. If the outside temp is over 80 degrees, the motor will reach its thermal heat up limit faster when we put the same weight on it than running it in the morning when it is cooler. The continuous torque is affected the hotter the motor gets.
